On the mix bus, mid/side processing splits the stereo signal into Mid information, which is what both channels share, and Side information, which is what differs between left and right. These moves work best when the mix is already close. If the balance is badly off, mid/side EQ may only disguise the problem.

The biggest risk is solving a broad mix problem with a very specific tool. Wide reverbs and delays are common sources of side buildup. A little side EQ can calm the wash so the mix stays defined. This is especially useful when the effects sound exciting on their own but start to blur the whole arrangement once the track is full.
How to keep it subtle and trustworthy

When the problem is really balance, arrangement, or basic tone, regular EQ or a simpler mix move will usually serve you better.
